STOCKTON — Two days before kickoff, the McNair football team has its new head coach.
Terrence “Terry” Hampton, the team’s defensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach today following the resignation of former head coach Curtis Perkins on Aug. 14.
Hampton works as a San Joaquin County probation officer, and has been acting as co-coach with offensive coordinator La Te’f Grim the past 12 days.
McNair went 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association in 2014, Perkins’ lone season as head coach, and has aspirations of a league title and a section playoff berth this year. Perkins, a former longtime Lodi High assistant, resigned to spend more time with his infant daughter Harper and wife Tina, whom he lives with in Williams, over 100 miles from Stockton, and to focus on his involvement in the police academy in Yuba City.
McNair opens the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Calaveras, and its home opener is against Modesto-Downey at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 4.
