SAN ANDREAS — McNair senior Derrion Grim will never get to play at Calaveras High’s football field again.
The Redskins’ fans, for one, are glad. They won’t soon forget how the versatile Eagles receiver caught five touchdowns from senior quarterback Osai Brown — all in the first half.
Grim, who ended the game with six touchdown catches for nearly 200 yards, also returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a score to set the tone in McNair’s 74-26 whipping of Calaveras Friday night in the season opener for both squads.
Brown did his best to upstage Grim with eight touchdown passes after the Redskins (0-1) couldn’t contain the Eagles’ no-huddle offense.
Calaveras back Anthony Giangregorio did his best to help with three touchdown runs for the Redskins, but his squad couldn’t keep pace with the Eagles (1-0).
Calaveras quarterback Dylan Byrd struggled, but finally threw a 71-yard touchdown to Trevor Ramirez.
Brown’s outstanding game included a pair of touchdowns to senior receiver Sean Hamilton, the second a 47-yard pass up the middle on the opening play of the second half.
McNair senior Malik Grim caught a 32-yard touchdown following a Calaveras fumble, and the rout was on.
“We did some things well, but there’s always room for improvement,” said McNair coach Terry Hampton, who was named the Eagles’ head coach this week. “I was confident in our team, but I had some jitters before the game. I’m very proud of the team. Osai (Brown) is a leader and Darrion (Grim) is a very humble kid. I was happy everyone on our team got to see the field.”
Derrion Grim’s final touchdoqn came from backup quarterback Gabriel Lopez from 39 yards.
“After playing four years with the same quarterback, we have a great chemistry,” said Grim, who also had touchdowns from 35, 35, 5, 5 and 50 yards. “I just give (Brown) a look and he knows where to throw the ball. It feels good to help our team get the win.”
