St. Mary’s girls basketball celebrates its CIF State Open Division championship Saturday in Berkeley.

This should come as no surprise. I’m guessing as Cal-Hi Sports was watching St. Mary’s girls basketball’s California Interscholastic Federation Open Division championship with Santa Ana-Mater Dei Saturday at Cal’s Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, it knew its girls basketball state team of the year would be the winner. Sure enough, after St. Mary’s rallied past Mater Dei 76-69 for its eighth state title, coach Tom Gonsalves’ record seventh state crown and its first Open Division title, it was decided. Cal-Hi named St. Mary’s its girls basketball team of the year, after the Rams ended the season 34-1 and on a 29-game winning streak. -It’s only fitting, considering St. Mary’s didn’t lose to a team from California this season –
